My husband (artist Chuck Middlekauff) and I found the 115-foot Pigeon Point Lighthouse perched on a cliff on the central California coast, just off California Highway 1 (AKA Pacific Coast Highway) between Santa Cruz and San Francisco.

This light has been around since November 15, 1872 and is going through a big renovation/restoration project, so the last time we saw it it was encased in a bunch of scaffolding, but when I snapped this shot in the late afternoon a few years ago, it stood out on picture-perfect splendor. A park service ranger was taking down the American and Californian flags, which added a separate note of wonder to our visit.

The restoration just started in February 2024, but it all started in December 2001, when a section of the iron belt course on the exterior of the lighthouse fell off. Anyway, the lighthouse is closed until it's fully restored (set for the fall of 2026!). You can still visit the lighthouse, but you may find the new pink bricks ready to paint instead of an all-white tower, or you may get to watch them paint it.

Visit the Lighthouse Restoration page for more information on the restoration progress.
